Overview
Kidney cancer is increasingly detected early, often incidentally on scans done for other reasons. Early tumours can sometimes be treated while sparing healthy kidney tissue.
Symptoms to watch for
- Blood in the urine
- A lump or mass in the side or abdomen
- Persistent pain in the side or lower back
- Unexplained weight loss or fever
- Tiredness or loss of appetite
How it is diagnosed
- Ultrasound and CT scan
- MRI when needed
- Blood and urine tests
- Biopsy in selected cases
Treatment options
- Partial nephrectomy — removes the tumour, spares the kidney
- Radical nephrectomy for larger tumours
- Targeted therapy and immunotherapy
- Active surveillance for very small tumours
